Selector Tool Challenge; a challenge where you use the selector tool as the primary tool for your piece of art. I’ve chosen the video game franchise Fallout as the subject of the piece and explain the setting and story leading up to the game series. We discuss the events before the great war that bathed the world in nuclear fire in the series.

Fallout Story Overview:

An alternate world where after world war 2, the transistor was never invented.

Modern electrical switches and circuit boards wouldn’t exist, everything would rely on vacuum tups and eldrich technology.

This is an atompunk world where robots nuclear powered everything energy weapons and robotic power armor came from this timeline with no transistor.

Everything has an odd what the future will be like mentality from 1950

The lifestyle of 1950 continued on in this alternate history well into the 21st century.

Resource wars began around 2052 due to the end of petroleum reserves caused another world war 3 like an event.

The UN was disbanded, US annexed Canda, and China (communists in this 1950’s red scare atmosphere, invited Alaska.

The Alaskan invaders also managed to infiltrate down to lower west of the united states and released a biological weapons the US was working on resulting in a New Plague that devastated the area.

Vault-tech becomes the most powerful company in the US in 2054 with government contracts to build huge underground vaults to protect the population in the case of nuclear warfare; which was seen as inevitable at this point.

October 23, 2077 tensions between China and the Us escalate to nuclear war. The war lasted only two hours, and resulted in such calamity both countries along with most others were destroyed. This resulted in the post-apocalyptic settings the fallout world takes place in.

The US government would survive in a faction in post-apocalyptic America called the enclave. Asolutis who believe everyone who has been touched by radiation is no longer human and doesn’t have any basic rights.

Mutants, ghouls, and monsters abound as the true nature of vault tech would remain hidden for years. FEV virus engineered by the US government and Vault Tech to make super soldiers.

Although some vaults were built to house people legitimately, most were built as unrestricted social experiments of often the most gruesome types.

Some Specific Examples include:

Vault 106 - pumped psychoactive drugs into the vaults of more than 100 inhabitants to see the results of isolation with this hallucinogen.

Some fell into a relaxed state, as planned.

Others fell into a violent frenzy that ultimately overcame the vault with disastrous effect.

Anyone who would wander into the vault later would also succumb to the gas and either wander the halls believing them to be original vault dwellers or also fall into a psychotic rage.

Possibly one of the many places that resulted in original raiders in the wasteland.

Vault 92 - particularly nasty, this was to preserve the best musicians. In reality, it was a subliminal attempt to control people though white noise; which also didn’t work out resulting in rage and aggression and the collapse of the vault.

Vault 11 - Elections would be held every year to sacrifice a dweller or all of them would die was this experiment. They were unaware that the test was actually to resist and the experiment would be over. Because the vault residents didn’t know about the election at all until being sealed in, they elected the first overseer to be the sacrifice and this would follow suit afterward. The winner became the overseer and at the end of their term, they would be sacrificed. Social order arose around this election concept until one overseer, ordered that the elections would now be held by the computers and not the dwellers themselves. Fear of social collapse resulted in a civil war within the vault that ultimately claimed all but one life. Whoever voice 1 was in the audio log.

Many more gruesome and diabolical experiments like there were carried out in most of the over 100 vaults built in the around 20-year span between the resource wars and the final war.

My favorite FAllout Youtuber; Oxhorn has a ton of great videos detailing vault, and everything Fallout and was officially recognized by Bethesda during the launch of Fallout 76. He got to go to the white springs hotel (a prominent location in fallout 76) in real life to preview the game with the press and even got to release footage with an NDA about some material.
